Tarangire is best known for hosting the largest concentration of elephants in northern Tanzania. During the dry season (June–October), thousands of animals gather along the Tarangire River, creating one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles outside the Serengeti. The park is also home to Tanzania’s second-highest concentration of wildlife after Serengeti.
The name “Tarangire” comes from the river that sustains life in the park. Beyond elephants, Tarangire shelters diverse species such as lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and buffaloes. It is also one of the few places in Tanzania where you can spot the rare fringe-eared oryx and the long-necked gerenuk.
